Rat Infestation

In the United States, rat infestations are at an all-time high. These rodents carry diseases and gather in shutterstock_376068865groups where food is easily accessible. Diseases can come from a rat’s bite, rat urine, and rat feces, but diseases aren’t the only reason rats are dangerous.

Rats are dangerous because they carry fleas and ticks with them to your residence. And since they come from sewers or trashcans, they can also carry those particles and germs to your clean home. The ticks and fleas on these rodents carry additional diseases as well. Not only that, but rats can destroy your home through scratching and gnawing walls, plumbing, and insulation with their teeth and feet. If rats get a hold of the wires in your house, they can quickly become a fire hazard because they will fray your wiring. Pet food and human food become unsanitary due to contamination.

The Diseases

The biggest threat rats pose on the safety of your home and the people living in it are the diseases they carry. These detrimental diseases can spread very quickly, through either contact with an infected rat, or just through breathing the air a rat has been in. Diseases rats carry include:

  • Leptospirosis – a bacterial disease with symptoms such as bleeding, red eyes, headache, high fever, and muscle pain. Untreated cases lead to kidney and liver damage.
  • Lymphocytic choriomeningitis – an animal-carrying disease with symptoms such as a headache, nausea, sore throat, fever, and chest pain. Untreated cases could lead to paralysis.
  • Rat-bite fever
